Spring in Autumn

September 4th, 2006

I was not sure when it would happen but I find myself fascinated by a girl again. Two days since I talked to her on a party and I still think about her. So this seems to be real.

It has been almost two years since my engagement broke and to be honest, after a time of regret I was enjoying the time since - to be able to put myself at the center of my world again, feeling the freedom and no ties.

No idea if there is a snowball's chance in hell she is interested in me, and this is real for me. I will find out for sure. It took a while but I think I feel ready to start dating again.

Joining The Red Rebellion

August 15th, 2006

After promising reports of the first footage generated by the MYSTERIUM sensor I finally decided to reserve a RED cam. After the IBC in Amsterdam when the first footage will be presented to the public the number of reservations will explode. Therefore it is a good point in time to reserve now.

One can get the deposit of $1k back at any time - but honestly - I do not want it back, I want that cam to be delivered on specs. This device will be up-to-date for a decade. Starting to record in 2K and later simply use the full available 4K once the PCs get fast enough to deal with that amount of data in post.

My set of Nikon primes should be good enough for 2K. It was an excellent decision to offer the Nikon F mount as option for the RED ONE cam. On the XL-H1 with a Mini35 they deliver excellent resolution and color. For 4K I will upgrade to RED lenses in a few years.

These are exciting times. A revolution will be happening soon right before our eyes. And I will be part of it.

Red Digital Cinema

August 8th, 2006

I have been to the Formula 1 race on the Hungaroring last Sunday. First time I saw a race on site and it was amazing. Newspapers have called it the "race of the century" and I can only second that.

Getting there was a bit painful because it was heavily raining and everything was muddy on location. And it was a total drive of 600km.

The race started in pouring rain with us sitting in our raincoats directly in front of where Michael Schumacher was placed in the grid. Alonso behind him because Klien was starting out of the pit lane for some reason.

What a noise! Without the ear muffs it would have been impossible to bear.

It was great to see Alonso racing from position 15 to 1 and Michael Schumacher be overtaken by so many other drivers after a first sprint.

Then, the horror, as Alonso lost some wheel nuts and was forced to give up. But not much later Michael Schumacher had to give up as well. What a relief, that saved the day.

And as Button's Honda engine lasted till the end it was a well deserved victory for him. His first ever.

The atmosphere was sensational, it was a great experience.

Google Calendar

July 23rd, 2006

I tried the Google Calendar last week and I really liked it. It is a very good example of a Web2.0 / Ajax application, very intuitive to handle.

The only thing I miss is to forward the notifications to an external email address, different from your gmail address. But a forward filter fixes that.

I have added a link to my personal calendar in the navigation bar to the right.

MySQL User Conference

April 21st, 2006

Tomorrow at this time I will be sitting in a plane heading off to California. It is time for our yearly MySQL's User Conference. This year it will be bigger and better than ever before, our user base is growing constantly.

People who know me realize that I am not the natural born speaker. I use to get quite nervous when I have to speak in front of a huge crowed of people. Nevertheless I seem to be able to transport my enthusiasm for what I am doing because I heard there are rumours they want me to speak during the opening keynote again, like last year.

Apart from that I will hold a BOF on Monday and give talks on Wednesday and Thursday.

I am really looking forward to see all those people who stand behind open source and have discussions with them. It is such a great community.
