AppleTV 2

February 28, 2012

Apple is said to release a new AppleTV 3 very soon. This reminded me to update my existing AppleTVs to the latest iOS version.

After jailbreaking with Seas0nPass (when prompted, hold both MENU + Play keys on the remote for 7 secs, then release MENU) one can SSH to the device after finding out its IP address in the Settings.

The original password for root is alpine.

First the password should be changed with passwd. Then one can update the packages with apt-get and install NitoTV. After a restart of the UI the new NitoTV entry becomes available.

apt-get update
apt-get install com.nito.nitoTV
killall AppleTV
killall Lowtide

Everything else can be installed using the Apple Remote. Its best to install RowMote on an iPad or iPhone and install the RowMote helper on the AppleTV. Then one can use a normal keyboard to enter text on the AppleTV.
